OUGD403- Visual Thinking- Alphabet Soup (Design Skills- Brief 1)

Brief One

Once I had received this first brief I began to write down my ideas of what the font FUTURA is and its history as well as my noun "occupation".

Futura (font)
Following the Bauhaus design philosophy, German type designer Paul Renner first created Futura between 1924 and 1926. Although Renner was not a member of the Bauhaus, he shared its views that a modern typeface should express modern models rather than a rivial of a previous design. Futura was commercially released in 1927, commissioned by the Bauer type foundry.

(Bauhaus: The Bauhaus originated in Weimar in 1919 as a new type of design school)

Bauer type foundry: The Bauer Type Foundry, or Bauer'sche Schriftgiesserei, was a prominent German manufacturer of metal type. It was founded in 1837 by Johann Christian Bauer in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The company published typefaces by several eminent designers, including Lucian Bernhard, Konrad Friedrich Bauer, Walter Braun, Heinrich Jost, Imre Reiner, Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler, Emil Rudolf Weiß, and Heinrich Wienyck.

Paul Renner
Studied architecture and painting in Berlin, Munich and Karlsruhe. Then worked as a painter in Munich. 1907-17: production assistant and presentation manager for Georg Müller Verlag in Munich. 1911: cofounder of a private school for illustration in Munich. 1925-26: head of the commercial art and typography department at the Frankfurter Kunstschule. 1926: director of the city of Munich’s Grafische Berufsschulen and from 1927 the Meisterschule für Deutschlands Buchdrucker.

While designing Futura, Renner avoided creating any non-essential elements, making use of basic geometric proportions with no serifs or frills. Futura's crisp, clean forms reflect the appearance of efficiency and forwardness even today.

Usage:
Futura had the honor of being the first typeface on the moon, chosen for a commemorative plaque left by the astronauts of Apollo 11 in 1969.

Just My Type a book about fonts- Simon Garfield

Louis Vuitton also use FUTURA as their font for logo and also body text.

From looking at the font Futura I feel it is important to consider the historical impact it has had in being forward moving, modern and part of the Bauhaus, therefore my designs eventually should reflect somewhat this aura of simplicity but also impacting.

Occupation - This research was created from the oxford dictionary and also through personal research of my views on what occupation means and also what others studying Graphic Design think which creates a wide variety of ideas.
